There are not many jobs in this country in tobacco—only about 5,000, I am told—because such products are mostly made and packed abroad. Making smoking obsolete will of course significantly increase disposable income among poorer smokers and in poorer communities, thus increasing welfare and, I hope, bringing new jobs.
