This data from banks is then matched with information that the DWP holds to confirm whether the account holder is indeed the benefit claimant, so third parties such as appointees and landlords will be screened out at this stage and their information used no further. The DWP will then consider any relevant disregards, such as specified compensation payments or money from the recent sale of a house, before assessing whether there does seem to have been an incorrect payment and taking next steps accordingly. For example, if an account is flagged as having more than £16,000 but, during routine checks, the DWP identifies that someone has had a compensation payment of £50,000 that is disregarded for the purposes of their benefit entitlement, their data will not be used further and no further action will be taken.
