The scale of fraud and error in the social security system is considerable. In the financial year to 2025, overpayments in universal credit totalled £6.4 billion, in pension credit £610 million, and in ESA £420 million. We need to take action to ensure that we spend taxpayers’ money correctly and that it goes to those who need it the most. The EVM will play a key role in doing so, saving an estimated £940 million by 2029-30.
