Secondly, we should acknowledge that any good government decision or action involves balancing some worthwhile upsides with at least some downsides. It is unrealistic to believe that there are decisions that are all positive, with no downsides. But prolonged legal disputes about whether the balance is right in the context of a particular decision would often leave real children suffering while protracted arguments took place over their heads. Childhood is not deferrable and we should not treat it as though it were.
