We need to ensure adequate funding and allocate sufficient resources to schools to support the delivery of PE and sport programmes, including the maintenance of facilities and the purchase of equipment. The maintenance of facilities is critical. For too long, sport and recreational play opportunities for all young people—all people—have been a discretionary item of spend for local authorities, not a compulsory one. It is the first item to be cut, and that is why so many of our swimming pools are being closed and so many playing fields are not being protected.
