I am afraid that I do not have time to recall the litany of cases in which inappropriate material has been found in schools, but the DfE’s “Narrowing the Digital Divide” consultation found that 41% of schools reported that they did not fully meet filtering and monitoring standards. I worry that the 59% that believe that their schools met the standards are absolutely mistaken, because six out of 24 filtering and monitoring systems hosted on the UK Safer Internet Centre’s website as “self-certified” allow a school administrator to disable barriers to illegal content, which the guidance does not allow. Only three out of 24 filtering and monitoring systems on the market are believed to be capable of meeting the standards for gen AI, leaving the vast bulk of schools unprotected.
