My probing Amendment 502YS would give parents the right to opt out of device-based homework. I understand the concerns that some schools have about the practicality of implementing this, but the evidence from children and young people who did their homework online is that 50% reported using social networks and 60% were texting while studying. For every 15 minutes of homework time, only 10 were spent studying, and pupils switched tasks every six minutes. This amendment is not about taking autonomy away from teachers or schools. We know that their professional judgment is central, but we must acknowledge that we have little reliable evidence of the educational benefits of screen-based homework, while evidence of potential harms from excessive screen time is steadily accumulating.
