The second challenge is getting the food from where it is produced to the consumer here in the UK. Over half the world’s trade goes through a handful of what are known as choke points. Some are instantaneously recognisable, such as the Strait of Hormuz, the Panama Canal and so on. Others—for example, the Kerch Strait in the Black Sea, which Russia attempted to use to restrict grain exports—are less well-known. The freedom of the seas is particularly important to an island such as the United Kingdom. An unstable world increases the risk of some choke points being closed off. That is a good reason why the NFU campaigned for food security to be included and recognised in our national security strategy.
