Border Security, Asylum and Immigration BillContribution
There are 48 million people in Sudan. Some 99% of Sudanese people who cross in boats receive asylum. That means that every single citizen of Sudan could turn up here and get asylum. We are not joining up the dots between the numbers—it is largely an issue of numbers—and the pressure on public services, housing, health and education. Between 2001 and 2021, we added 7 million people to our population. We cannot go on doing this, and we are not helping people. I say to the noble and right reverend Lord, Lord Sentamu, that I never thought I would see or hear the day, but we have seen people in our newspapers saying they do not feel safe in this country, and then we are sending armed police to the airport to pick up a writer. We have lost the plot, I have to say.
