Border Security, Asylum and Immigration BillContribution
I would have thought that it made sense to talk to our allies, and not only about the refugee convention of 1951. We need to talk to them about how the European convention is dealt with. It was largely developed by this country—something of which many Members are very proud—but, just as Whitehall gold-plated responses to the EU, there is no doubt in my mind that there is a tendency now in our courts to push the envelope well beyond what Parliament and those who wrote those treaties intended. This happens—things change. That is precisely why we should be talking to our allies, many of whom are facing the same problems.
