Your Lordships’ House’s representational power once the hereditaries are gone will actually be weaker than it was when it first developed centuries ago. At least in those days it represented powerful interests in the life of the nation, whereas we, except for the Lords temporal, are almost all here as creatures of prime ministerial patronage.
