We are not a House of full-time professional politicians, nor do we want to become one. We are proud to have among us people who remain busy as surgeons, judges, captains of industry, chancellors, vice-chancellors, ambassadors and high commissioners. Their experience, past and present, augments the work that we all do together: holding the Government of the day to account and improving the legislation that is brought before us. I agree with the points made by the noble Lord, Lord Hacking, and my noble friend Lord Blencathra in response to the commendable example given by my noble friend Lord Attlee.
