Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill

Contribution

To take another issue, are schools required to set uniform policies that accommodate clothing that may be considered a matter of cultural preference rather than religious belief? I have come under attack in the past for defending a school’s right not to include hijabs in its uniform policy for five and six year-olds, who are clearly well below the age of puberty. I stress that this is not about being hostile to Muslim practices; many people are not aware that there is a wide range of views on this subject within the Muslim community, though not everyone feels equally able to express them publicly.
