Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill

Contribution

At the moment we are dealing with the aftermath of the rape grooming gangs. I am glad that the Government have taken that on board and that there is now going to be a national inquiry; we have read the Casey audit and so on. We should remind ourselves that many of those young victims were in state care homes and many went to school, and we know that teachers knew what was going on and looked the other way. It is a useful reminder—when we say we are looking at home-schooling only through the prism of safeguarding, we have to be careful that we do not end up smearing parents or becoming complacent about the weaknesses of state provision over the years.
