Speaking in the House of Lords on 3 July 2025

Debate

Terrorism Act 2000 (Proscribed Organisations) (Amendment) Order 2025

Contribution

Actually, it poses for me a question in public policy terms about why it has taken so long to place restrictions on this organisation. I accept that there is a difficult judgment to make on when an organisation that is carrying out acts like this crosses the terrorism threshold for which—as the noble Lord, Lord Anderson, and others pointed out—the severity of sanctions is particularly high. However, it is a nonsense that an organisation that has avowedly put as its purpose criminal damage against defence companies and a number of other only vaguely associated organisations has been able to operate freely for as long as it has. It has been recruiting, raising money and advertising, and it sometimes live-streams its crimes as they happen.
