Speaking in the House of Lords on 3 July 2025

Debate

Terrorism Act 2000 (Proscribed Organisations) (Amendment) Order 2025

Contribution

I would like the Minister to take away another of the recommendations from my review. There is a gap in the law, at the moment, such that we ought to be able to place a restriction on an organisation that is committing systematic criminality in the name of a cause without necessarily branding it terrorist. A criminal protest proscription has criminal sanctions to it, but would not get the full suite of terrorism powers, nor would we end up branding young people who will probably be committing terrorist acts by the weekend. I hope that the Minister and his colleagues have been in touch with the Metropolitan Police about its strategy to deal with that eventuality, assuming that this goes through soon.
