In looking at how much money is wasted in the NHS through medicine waste, I read a report by NHS Frimley from 2024 that suggested that about £300 million a year across England is wasted, including about £150 million through unused drugs and £50 million-worth of drugs being disposed of by care homes. NHS Frimley said it felt that it lost about £4 million a year. Many of these issues come down to overstocking, wrongly stocking and the drugs not being used in the correct way. A centralised process for this makes sense, because I do not think any of us would want the drugs to be expired or not have the intended use.
