Therefore, it would be extraordinary if, in enabling assistance to be provided, we were to permit medical professionals to raise proactively the subject of someone taking their own life when that had not been raised by the person themselves. That seems to me to be the more consistent approach; otherwise, we will have a very strange approach whereby a medical professional will be able to raise proactively with somebody, using the provisions in the Bill—should it become law—providing them with medical assistance to end their own life.
