Children’s Wellbeing and Schools BillContribution
Conversely, comprehensive phone bans have demonstrated remarkable success. Norway’s implementation has led to improved academic performance, reduced bullying and better mental health outcomes, particularly for girls. These are not theoretical gains. They are real improvements in children’s lives. Head teachers who have implemented a complete ban are evangelical about the benefits, for both children’s and teachers’ well-being. I echo the point made by my noble friend Lord Bethell about which schools are implementing complete bans. If we were to implement a ban, we would be helping most those schools that are struggling with behaviour and discipline. The schools would feel that we had their back—in arguing with parents and making the case, and with children. We need to take the pressure off schools by making this clear.
