Of course, corporate executives are laughing all the way to the bank. The biggest beneficiaries are shareholders and company executives. Drax had pre-tax profits of £1.06 billion in 2024 and £1.01 billion the year before, boosted by subsidies of around £800 million a year. Last year, it paid £97 million in dividends and announced a £300 million share buyback programme. There is no means testing for corporate benefits, neither for Drax nor for any other corporation. So why are profitable companies being subsidised? Why do the Government not apply some kind of a means test to see whether they really deserve it?
