The Liberal Democrats firmly believe that biomass is not a form of renewable energy and should not continue to receive government support. Biomass is an incredibly inefficient, expensive and damaging-to-our-biodiversity method of producing electricity. We note particularly the Climate Change Committee’s seventh carbon budget’s recommendations, which confirmed unequivocally that there is no role for large-scale, unabated biomass generation at high load factors in the pathway beyond the expiry of the existing contracts in 2027. These regulations represent a painful and unnecessary compromise in our energy policy that will undermine our climate goals, squander taxpayers’ money, provide poor value for money for energy bill payers and serve to erode public trust in our net-zero goals.
