As we have heard, burning wood generates 18% more CO₂ emissions than coal. Drax itself produces a staggering four times the emissions of our last coal-fired power station. Last year, 13 million tonnes of CO₂, or 3.5% of UK total CO₂ emissions, came from Drax alone. This is not green energy. It is not good. It is not helping with our climate goals. Even if every single tree that Drax burns is replaced, it will take at least 50 years for those new trees to grow to absorb this carbon. That is fundamentally incompatible with our 2050 net-zero goals. It is bad for bill payers. It is bad for the environment. It is not a system that should be allowed to continue.
