I reaffirm my support for new clause 50, which protects the fundamental right to protest. On the potential infringements of protest overall in the Bill, let me say that protest is not a nuisance but a vital part of democracy. Whether it is the suffragettes demanding the vote, trade unionists fighting for fair pay or Black Lives Matter campaigners calling for racial justice, every major advance in civil rights has come through protest.
