The chief executive of Wightlink, the Solent ferry operator delivering lifetime services between the Isle of Wight and mainland England, providing many of the same services to local people that inconsistently led to the exemption of Scotland, where the ferries have the highest per capita passenger pollution in the UK, pointed out that imposing significant ETS costs under these circumstances would divert essential investment away from clean technologies. Putting a carbon tax on the ferry to the Isle of Wight to allow people to go to and from their homes is deeply damaging and of no benefit, except for the Secretary of State and his net-zero zealots.
