The company is also seeking to replace an ageing vessel. Once again, insufficient grid capacity means that it will have to opt for another hybrid vessel or, alternatively, build a smaller ship to avoid the 5,000-tonne limit, yet downsizing to a less efficient diesel vessel with reduced capacity runs directly counter to the company’s overall ambition to cut emissions by 25,000 tonnes annually. This cannot be an outcome that the Government should desire. The ETS alone is expected to cost the company £1 million, an expense that will inevitably fall on ferry users—residents and visitors alike.
