This will have an impact on the efficacy of seclusions and the ability to restrain the most disruptive pupils. Is it realistic to assume that only two teachers from each school need to be trained for just two hours? Is the real number to ensure appropriate understanding and governance not a significant multiple of that? Children’s behaviour is irregular and unpredictable. Every teacher in the classroom must be confident that they have the legal right to use reasonable force and seclusions where necessary. It is of great concern to the Opposition that this measure may negatively impact teachers who have not received the official training to take the necessary steps of using reasonable force. Let me be clear: no teacher, pupil or parent desires any use of force, but sometimes, regrettably, it is the only option left.
