My father kept the issue of the Illustrated London News from the time when the British Army liberated Bergen-Belsen in April and May 1945, and it was of course a truly horrific issue. Seventy years later, I remember it as clearly as if it were yesterday. At 12 or 13 years old, you remember the things you are familiar with, and the thing that I most remember is the picture of a British Army bulldozer driven by a soldier pushing bodies into a pre-dug trench. The soldier had around his face a cloth, no doubt because the smell from the bodies was so appalling. That was 70 years ago, and the images remain burned into my memory. I really do not need to be reminded of the appalling deeds that went on and the horrors of the Holocaust.
