Employment Rights Bill

I point noble Lords to the Australian Parliament Employment Committee’s report on digital transformation in the context of a strike last year. Woolworths is the largest supermarket chain in Australia with a 32% share of the market and the Woolworths Melbourne South regional distribution centre had a 17-day strike with very significant impacts. Workers had simply had enough. They belonged to the United Workers Union and the place of the union in this is very interesting. They said, “We are sick of every second of every move of our work being monitored, of us being driven to work harder and harder, not being replaced by robots but being forced to work like robots, like we were a machine when we are of course a human being of flesh and blood”.
