Employment Rights Bill

Contribution

That is the issue of the monitoring of workers while they are working. The other two amendments to which I have attached my name address issues of people being employed or able to stay employed. I point your Lordships’ Committee to the landmark case of Pa Edrissa Manjang, an Uber Eats worker who faced repeated difficulties with verification checks that used AI and automated processes. He was permanently suspended from the platform after a series of failed facial recognition checks because of “continued mismatches”. He told the company, “Your algorithm by the looks of things is racist”—and that indeed was what the employment tribunal found.
