In California the consumer watchdog CalMatters has been highlighting the case of food service industry workers, and of course in the US tips are terribly important for many restaurant workers. Scheduling software assigns people to shifts. Some shifts are highly lucrative, some are much less lucrative. Some of the things the algorithm might use in the allocation of shifts is whether you take breaks, how fast you turned over a table—which is not going to be in your control, because it depends on the customers you get—and where you live. But all of this is invisible to workers and effectively impossible to challenge.
