Bank Resolution (Recapitalisation) Bill [Lords]

Contribution

The Government frequently repeat the point that their focus is on economic growth. That is a goal that all of us in this House share. The decision to place a levy on the banking sector to cover the cost of a competitor’s failure must be carefully weighed against the broader growth objectives. This is an economic climate in which taxes and borrowing are up, and business confidence, jobs and growth are down, but the Government have an opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to economic growth through this legislation—and we, of course, hope that they will.
