The Government maintain that internal police authorisation is sufficient. However, the 2020 Bridges judgment found the existing legal framework woefully inadequate, noting that far too much discretion is left to individual officers regarding where LFR is deployed and who is added to watch-lists. The constitutional principle is clear: if the police require a judicial warrant to invade a single home, they should certainly require judicial approval before scanning the sensitive biometric data of tens of thousands of innocent citizens in a public square.
