I was invited to apologise to the unnamed and unidentified complainant, and I refused. It was explained that, in the absence of an apology, I would be reported to the prosecutor for a hate crime and would have to defend myself in court. The hate crime, it was explained, was not objective or grounded in the merits viewed through the filter of the law. No, it was solely to be assessed subjectively by the beholder. I was not going to be cowed, so I literally said, “No, go and prosecute me”. I dared them. I would welcome the opportunity to set the record straight. My council chief executive swallowed hard, but I never heard from them again, which shows what a nonsense the whole thing was.
