I also support the amendment on small businesses in the name of the noble Lord, Lord Londesborough, wholeheartedly. I cannot understand why the Government do not recognise the essential role that these entrepreneurial businesses play in supporting economic growth. I mentioned on Report the large number of small businesses that exist in the UK: a great strength. It is 5.5 million. This is an important group of people. The noble Lord’s well-judged amendment would allow the Treasury to protect them from this damaging measure if the need arose.
