Lord Lexden (Con)

Speaking in the House of Lords on 18 March 2025

Debate

Non-Domestic Rating (Multipliers and Private Schools) Bill

Contribution

My Lords, in accordance with the custom, I thank all those who have spoken in favour of the amendments in this group. A powerful case has been made for exempting independent schools with charitable status in respect of certain parts of the valuable work they do, such as special needs education, music and sport. It is an utter tragedy that the Government cannot see that case. I note that, in the course of his remarks, the Minister said not one word of appreciation for and thanks to the independent schools for the enormous role they play in the education system. It may be 7%, but it is a very important contribution. With that, I beg leave to withdraw my amendment.
