The total cost for Peers in the House of Lords last year was a mere £22.1 million, so we are cheap at the price. Our current system is five times cheaper than any proposed new elected Lords Chamber. When the public are told that, as well as the consequences of what an elected Chamber would be—another bunch of party politicians, no different from the Commons—they would overwhelmingly vote down an elected Lords, as we should Amendment 11.
