English Football: Financial Sustainability and Governance

Contribution

It is a pleasure to serve under your chairship, Mr Turner. Football is the UK’s most watched and played sport. Some 35 million fans have been watching the top four leagues this season, and there are 40,000 football clubs in this country—more than in any other country. As a season ticket holder of Wolverhampton Wanderers, I hope that our club will stay in the premier league. The Premier League has a lot to offer. It contributes £8 billion to the UK economy and makes a direct tax contribution of £4.2 billion to the Exchequer—and, out of that contribution, £5 billion comes from outside London. In my constituency I also have a lower league football club, AFC Wulfrunians, soon to become Wolverhampton City football club. I know the contribution that the club makes to the community, just as my club Wolverhampton Wanderers does through its foundation. I very much support the Football Governance Bill because an independent football regulator will make improvements. I hope that the Bill will create a proper process for distributing revenue throughout the football pyramid, with proper deals between the Premier League and the English Football League.
