Most services provide nicotine replacement methods, which is fine for smokers who just want to avoid the dangers of tobacco smoke, but that does not help those who find it very difficult to quit or who want to kick their addiction to nicotine. As we all know, nicotine is very addictive and will cost the user a lot of money for the rest of their lives—hence the demand for non-nicotine replacement methods. One of the methods that has been found to be extremely effective is using pharmaceutical drugs such as varenicline, which work on the brain receptors that respond to nicotine. Smoking cessation services tell me that they work extremely well and permanently, but they also tell me that they cannot provide this method because they cannot afford to have a prescriber on hand. Instead, they have to refer the patient to a GP, and this costs money. For this and other reasons, I am looking for ways of getting more money to local authorities, so that they can fund these services more generously and appropriately in line with the need and demand.
