Debate

Great British Energy Bill

Contribution

I am sorry that I missed a debate on pylons last week. It clashed directly with another Lords commitment in which I was involved, so I could not be here. The pylons are obviously an issue. How much can we put underground and can we have the vast change in the entire grid and transmission system by putting spare electricity from the winds at night through electrolysis into hydrogen, and then distributing the hydrogen—not by pylons, obviously, but by modern methods—similar to how we distribute diesel and petrol now? That might be a little more dangerous but one of the ways that we begin to get to grips with this issue. The pylons’ environmental impact will otherwise undoubtedly be considerable. Could we have a few comments on that?
