I highlight again the remarks that have been made by the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which has said, when examining jurisdictions with assisted dying regulations, that this can lead to discrimination against disabled people if they are not grounded in a rights-based understanding of disability. The committee has raised particular concerns from examining the situation in Canada. So I say, in conclusion on Amendment 496A, that we cannot be in a situation where assisted dying is seen by disabled people as an escape from the cycle of pain and financial pressures, which is why we want to raise this issue here.
