On the monitoring of flaring and venting, the legislation provides for a measurement-based approach for larger installations which will be able to keep track of vented CO₂ emissions as and when they occur. For smaller installations, it provides for a calculation-based approach which enables operators to use samples to calculate the amount of CO₂ being removed from the extracted oil and gas at different parts of the process; these can then be analysed on at least a weekly basis.
