It has been reported in the last few days that Seema Kennedy, a former Conservative Minister and now a director of Ofwat, is leading a campaign to make it harder for consumers to sue water companies that breach the terms of their licence. Can you imagine a regulator not protecting people and not keeping a distance from the industry but actually siding with the industry? Such revelations inevitably make people more sceptical of the alleged independence of regulators. The regulators have let the industry be controlled by companies with criminal convictions, and the Government are asking us to trust them.
