Water (Special Measures) Bill [HL]Contribution
No Minister has ever explained why such companies are permitted to run the water industry, and why the regulators that have presided over this should continue to be allowed to make rules. It has now been reported that water firms passed thousands of pollution tests under a self-monitoring regime, yet the tests were never actually conducted. The water firms’ own operational data for sewage plants across the country reveals how outflows or effluent had stopped, in some cases just for a few hours, on days the samples were supposed to be taken. The Environment Agency allowed these so-called “no-flows” to be recorded as compliant with the environmental conditions of their operating permits.
