I have a terrible problem with designated, chosen-by-whatever-means members of boards who are representing consumers. It always seems to me that, if you are on a board, you ought to represent consumers in any case. The consumers are a crucial part of any board’s decisions. The idea that Mrs Snooks or Mr Jones is the only person who speaks up for consumers seems to breed a particular kind of person who is a consumer representative—and all of us have suffered from consumer representatives. The fact is that you need to have every member of the board concerned about that.
