The additional hurdles proposed here would have made it impossible for those terminally ill people who have made the choice—and this is about choice—to die with dignity. The Bill would have imposed significantly more stringent conditions and safeguards than in countries where assisted dying is already allowed. It was startling to me that, in the Select Committee stage of our proceedings, evidence from providers of assisted dying overseas, where it is already working, was denied. This Bill is more robust; it is safer than theirs. It is workable and enforceable.
