Railways Bill

Passenger numbers will no longer be the key driver of success. As an engineering-led business, the incentive will be to increase reliability by reducing services, and the Government are already doing that. Look at Avanti West Coast and its timetable for the summer. It has already been nationalised, and it has been directed by the Department for Transport to cut one in seven services to save money. Look at Govia Thameslink: it has been nationalised and ordered by the Department for Transport to cut hundreds of trains this summer to save money. I am not making this up; this is what is happening now as reported in The Telegraph. [Laughter.] Labour Members are laughing about The Telegraph. The first article was in The Guardian, which is their paper of record.
