The advantage of transporting freight by rail has been particularly relevant recently as the M8 motorway has been subject to long-standing structural repairs. Rail currently carries only about 7% of freight. If the UK were to match the European average of 19%, that would remove millions of heavy goods vehicles from the road and cut carbon emissions while reducing road congestion.
