Throughout the passage of the Bill in the Commons, its wording was flagged as containing a dangerous loophole that could lead to vulnerable people with eating disorders qualifying for assisted suicide, which is contrary to the Bill’s stated intent to focus only on those who are physically terminally ill. Those who refuse treatment, even for illnesses that would not normally be considered terminal, might come within the Bill’s definition. For instance, someone with diabetes who stopped taking insulin or someone with heart disease who stopped taking medication could be eligible for assisted suicide.
