In Oregon, annual reports from 2021 to 2023 listed diabetes, arthritis, hernias and kidney failure as conditions that qualified for assisted suicide, not because they were inherently fatal but because treatment was refused or unavailable. Patients with non-terminal conditions, therefore, can become terminal by choosing to forgo life-extending treatments. Without treatment, type 1 diabetes is an inevitably progressive and irreversible condition that would result in death in weeks, not necessarily months, but with insulin, a person with diabetes can live a long and healthy life for many years.
