However, Amendment 87 would actually weaken this protection as it covers only mental disorder, and VSED—I am going to use that as shorthand for voluntary stopping eating and drinking—is not a mental disorder. Whether accidentally or intentionally, this opens the way for cases like the Oregon one of a woman who made herself eligible using VSED. This is the reason for Amendment 87A. While I think this group covers anorexia, we have to be really careful that it covers other eating disorders as well; anorexia accounts for about 8% of eating disorders, so we also need to think about bulimia and other conditions.
